How I’m Personally Using AI

Here’s how I’ve been personally using AI, and it’s a game changer.

You know how most people are using AI now?

One prompt at a time.

Type in a few sentences of background, ask a question, then iterate. Or, pop in a draft email, then refine.

That’s not bad, but there’s a better way.

I’m calling it Master Context.

With Master Context, you pick a domain you’ll use AI for and give it everything it needs to see the big picture.

One build. Forever valuable.

I got the idea from my friend Tiago Forte’s Second Brain concepts. And the domain I wanted to implement first?

Family.

My daughters are grown and out of the house, so I wanted to build AI to give me ideas to stay in touch, plan meaningful experiences and more.

It’s already helped me plan out the perfect Alaskan vacation, give me ideas for when our entire family is at home this summer and stay in touch when we’re all busy with life, living in different places.

It gave me much better answers much faster because it had all the context.

Master Context.

The family Master Context worked so well I made one for work.

Then that worked so well I made one called ThinkingOS, which goes really deep. It’s helping me like an on-call life coach or high-performance therapist, helping me focus my time on what I enjoy, get out of funks and recover more quickly from setbacks.

Over time I’ll add other Master Contexts for other areas of my life: fitness, diet, finances and more.

Here’s the best way to create one yourself.

1) Focus on one domain.

2) Train the model.

3) Fine tune to perfection.

Here are the steps with examples.

Focus On One Domain

First, choose the domain you’re most excited about.

What area of your life would you like an AI partner to brainstorm with? To fine-tune ideas? To improve? I’ve found it’s best to focus on one area at a time.

Maybe it’s family, work, or thinking like I chose. But other areas might be better: finances, diet, fitness, travel, or even being a great partner or parent.

Choose a domain you’re excited about, that will be relevant for you for a long time, and that you’d want to engage with.

Fire up a chat in your AI model of choice and name it. End this step by telling the model what you’ll want to create.

Sample prompt:

I want to use this chat to have you help me with ____ (ADD GOAL). As an example, I can see myself asking you questions like ____ (GIVE SEVERAL EXAMPLES).

I’ll start by loading a lot of information you’ll want to remember.

Train The Model

Start loading in information.

Of course, load documents or articles giving the model the background you want.

But I’ve found that many of the most important things you want the model to know are in your head. So just talk to the model and enter the transcript.

I had a long solo drive while building my work Master Context, so I just talked into ChatGPT about the most important elements of running the business.

Your AI tool will make sense of your ramblings, you just need it to know what’s important to you.

Here are some of the things I loaded in the three Master Contexts I’ve started.

Family: Names of our family members, birthdays (And yes, including our donkey Louie Hamilton’s birthday), individual interests, things we like to do as a family, games we enjoy playing, sports teams we follow, places we like to go around town, past vacation itineraries, favorite foods by person, favorite cocktails, and more.

Work: Our business goals, a two-page document of our business model, examples of the content we create, our BD process, ways we “delight and surprise” clients in delivery, our short and long-term goals, team members including their roles and responsibilities, our team HBDI data, and even my own strengths and weaknesses. I even loaded samples of my writing so it would know my voice.

ThinkingOS: This was the deepest. I loaded in my goals for life, things that give me energy, things that bug me, notes from several sessions with a high-performance thinking coach I went to, and what triggers personal stress.

I added what I wanted the model to remind me if I get stressed, like methods I’ve found that work to center myself and get my energy back. I entered a list of quotes that inspire me (over half were from Joseph Campbell). Then I loaded on long list of events that seemed like hugesetbacks at the time, but now feel like small bumps in the road, and I asked it to remind me of these.

And here’s the best part. I asked both of my daughters to record a voice message to remind me of the important things in life, our family, and what I should specifically remember if I feel a setback. Their messages moved me. I loaded their exact words and asked the model to remind me of them if needed.

Here’s what I found important in this Train The Model step:

Just get started.

Each thing I loaded gave me better ideas to load more. And what’s great is that you don’t have to be perfect.

The next step solves for that.

Fine Tune To Perfection

You can’t ask Excel how to use Excel. But you can ask AI how to use AI.

Once you’ve loaded everything you can think of, add this killer prompt:

I’ve added everything I can think of into this Master Context, but I’m sure there’s more you need from me.

Ask me every question you can think of to be able to answer 95% of questions I might ask you about the goal I originally shared.

This is important to me so be blunt and bold. Don’t hold back.

Ask me these questions one at a time starting now.

Wow!

I couldn’t believe the depth of the questions I got back. The questions the model asked me were so good that they alone made the project worth the effort!

Family: The model prompted me to think much more deeply about how to be a better husband and dad.

Work: The model prompted me to see areas of improvement I hadn’t thought of.

And ThinkingOS: The model prompted me to think of new ways I can avoid mental setbacks before they even happen.

What could a Master Context do for you?

There’s no doubt in my mind that AI will have the biggest impact on the world I’ve ever seen.

And when things happen like that, you want to be an early adopter.

I was using AI a lot before I loaded and trained these three models, but it was episodic. I was getting good results, but not great.

Now they’re great.

Imagine having a thought partner that can answer any question about what’s most important to you, and has the context to make their ideas awesome.

→ Family: I’ll have the entire family together on X date. What’s a day trip in and around Atlanta that’ll be something each of us will remember forever?

→ Work: I’ve got a meeting with the team tomorrow. What’s 30-minute trust building exercise we can do centered on the brand we’re building?

→ ThinkingOS: I’m feeling a bit down after a crazy-busy week. It was successful, but I’m spent, flying home now on my 4th flight in 3 days. What should I do now get in the right mindset to have a super weekend with Becky?

Big Results from a small input.

All because of a Master Context.

OK, now get excited.
