Business Growth Starts With Overcoming The Lies We Tell Ourselves

Last week we discussed the five common lies in business development:

“I can’t,”
“I don’t know what to do,”
“I might do it wrong,”
“I’m too busy,”
“I’m going to look bad.”

Everyone feels these. They sneak into our minds. But they don’t go away without us acting.

Here’s the good news—you can overcome them. Here’s how to tackle these lies head-on and move forward in 2025 with confidence.

1. Focus on Engagement

The fear of looking bad often stems from self-doubt.

To overcome this, shift your focus to engagement.

Instead of worrying about yourself, prioritize building a relationship with your client.

Ask questions, listen, and be genuinely interested in their needs.

When you’re meeting with clients, imagine there’s a video camera recording your interaction from a corner of the room. Take this perspective from time to time on the call. Are they engaged? Are they adding a lot to the conversation?

Keep asking: What’s my next move to create more engagement?

2. Fall in Love With Their Problem

If you find yourself saying, “I can’t,” or “I’m don’t know what to do” it’s often because you haven’t fully understood your client’s problem.

The solution? Fall in love with their problem.

The more you understand the challenges your clients face, the easier it becomes to offer solutions.

Falling in love with their problem will build the relationship and help you think of helpful follow ups.

3. Give Them the Experience of Working With You

The fear of “I might do it wrong” can be paralyzing, but the solution is simple: Give them a taste of working with you.

Whether training them, helping them think through an issue or even giving a demo, offering a firsthand experience focused about them builds trust.

Once your clients see how you work, the fear of doing it wrong fades away.

4. Always Make a Recommendation

To fight the “I’m too busy” lie, it’s important to always make a recommendation.

By doing this, you stay focused on your client’s needs and show that you’re committed to helping them.

Even small, actionable recommendations keep the momentum going and make it clear that you’re invested in their success.

Moving Forward

Overcoming the lies is a battle we always face. They’re always trying to distract us from action.

The solution?

Moving from self-centered to other-focused. Focusing on others is the master key that unlocks new levels of success.

It’s trite, but true: Helping others accomplish their goals is the best way to accomplish yours.

Focus on helping others even more this year.

If you’re just starting out, what’s your first move?

If you’re already great at giving, how can you leverage that skill further through better systems or teamwork?

There’s always a next level of impact.

What’s yours?
