I had the pleasure of interviewing Mohamed “Mo” Massaquoi, an organizational psychologist and speaker. He is passionate about helping high-performing teams achieve more.
Mo asked Mohamed
“What’s your personal system to keep learning and to keep growing your impact?”
Mohamed responded:
“I’m trying to eliminate failure points. In sports, especially in the NFL, you practice more than you play. The reason is you have to function at such a high level when it is time to perform that you have to get all the mistakes out in a practice form.
You don’t want to practice things in front of seventy thousand or one million people watching. That’s not the time to do it. I think something that we all get guilty of is that we are in play mode at work sometimes so much that we are not carving out time to develop.
So, for me, I try to take inventory of what has taken place, and there are certain strategic days that are blocked out of my calendar in three-month increments to where I can have heavy downtime and developmental time. And in addition I am taking inventory of my week. I am meticulous and jot down notes, trying to track and measure everything. If you don’t measure it, you lose it.
So what went well, what didn’t go well, what do I need to follow up on, etc? Just so that I know where I am at all the time. If not, you are just running on a hamster wheel where things are very loose. I am a fan of structure. So the more structure I can add, the more effective I can be.
I am a fan of knowing how I can improve. That’s why I track what I do as well as ask for feedback so that I can keep improving over time.”
