Minute Mindset
I’ll start each new newsletter with Minute Mindset–a fast idea with long-term impact. Here’s this month’s… I’m hearing a lot of fear about the economy. Our world has really slowed down. Our newer folks have yet to go through a cycle like this before. The competition is undercutting us. What’s under comments like this? Comparing your results to past performance. It’s natural to do, but unhelpful. It can make you want to quit, slow down, or wait it out. Most professionals have had banner years for a decade, and now things “might” be slowing down. Times are tougher. There are going to be ebbs and flows in the economy. (Aside: that linked video is the best summary of economic cycles I’ve ever seen!) Yep, slowdowns are bound to happen. They’re inevitable. The more interesting question: How should you handle them? Answer: Focus on your inputs. Love tough times. Much of your competition will quit. You can do the opposite. If it’s twice as hard to get a meeting, double how many you ask for. Focus on relationships. Helping. Staying close. Slowdowns are when you win market share. Don’t worry about beating last year’s goals. Worry about being more helpful than your competition. I loved how my friend and rainmaker Mike said it to me last weekend… Relationships are recession-proof. |

How We’ve Grown BIG With Cannon Carr
I’m the interviewee in this one! I had an amazing time talking with Cannon Carr, CEO of Corner Cap, a high-end investment management firm. How To Motivate Yourself With Stefan Falk
Another great recent conversation was with Stefan Falk about his book Intrinsic Motivation, which I really enjoyed. I felt like I was reading downhill, covering a lot of ground. Learning Library Favorite
Here’s an older asset from our searchable Learning Library aligning with today’s topic of doubling down on relationships. Dr. Ivan Misner might be the #1 worldwide expert in meeting new people. His organization, Business Networking International (BNI) has introduced 10s of millions of people to each other. Like us, Ivan believes in giving over getting and doing so to create the biggest impact. SO GREAT! Listen on Learning Library. |
Let This Linger
Whew! I hope you like this new monthly format. Hit reply and let me know. Here’s something to linger on. Whenever you sense things are slowing down, speed up. If it’s twice as hard to get a meeting, ask for twice as many. If it’s harder to get people’s attention, offer more value. If someone’s having a tough time, help more than normal. Tough times aren’t about us. Or our annual goals. Or our personal expectations. Tough times are for helping others. Everyone remembers being helped, especially when times were tough. Tough times accentuate how important investing in your relationships and future self is. Yes, relationships are recession-proof. They not only win in the long term. They win in the short term too.
