What’s On My Mind
Short one this week!
I just finished leading a super fun session with a large client team at a major consulting firm.
One thing stood out.
How to think about outreach.
I knew I had struck a chord when the leader said, “that’s another quote I’m writing down.”
I’ll close with the quote and start with the problem…
Almost everyone overthinks outreach.
Common overthinking:
- I’m not sure what they want.
- They might not want to go to this event.
- I don’t want to seem like a pest.
- They didn’t respond to my last note.
- I’m not sure if they’ve seen this content before.
- This isn’t good enough.
- It’s been a long time since I reached out.
Ever felt any of those?
They’ll stop you in your tracks.
That’s the problem.
Here’s the solution.
Think 10x vs. 1x.
Think of this next outreach as 1 of 10 that you will do.
Maybe you will reach out 1 time a month for a year or so.
You’ll add value every time. You’ll show you care. You’ll earn the right to deepen the relationship.
The other person might respond to a particular outreach, but they might not.
They might see immense value in one outreach but less in another.
They might be blown away by one idea or just be busy and unable to look at another.
All those are OK. All should be expected.
The takeaway…
You’ll freeze when you put all the pressure on yourself to be perfect in the next outreach.
Don’t strive for perfection.
Strive for progress.
Strive for persistence.
Worrying about being perfect in 1x outreach will cause you to pause, or not do anything at all.
Be thoughtful. Offer value. Personalize your message.
I know you’ll do that.
But most of all, do it over and over.
Don’t worry too much about the next 1x outreach.
Worry about the 10x of persistence.
To win the relationship advantage, don’t think of outreach as a one time event.
Think of outreach as a campaign of helpfulness.
